Book Review - The Book that Made Your World, by Vishal Mangalwadi

In The Book that Made Your World: How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization, Dr. Vishal Mangalwadi takes a stance that I found rather unexpected, but also very refreshing. Rather than decrying Christianity and the missionaries who endeavoured to introduce it in foreign lands, Dr. Mangalwadi praises that which was laudable in their work, a work which was based on their understanding of the Bible. In this day and age, that is becoming an unusual perspective.

Dr. Mangalwadi also takes the opportunity to caution the West against tossing aside this book, which brought so much to its civilization in the realms of education, medicine, material wealth and technology. He shares some of the story of his own journey into Christianity and the different world views of Eastern and Western religion which shaped their respective cultures.

While I don't personally agree with Dr. Mangalwadi's assessments in every detail (for instance, he seems to view the Roman church as less oppressive in medieval times than I do), he brings a much-needed perspective to the table, a willingness to see the good in a book and a religion that so many have denounced and to speak out about his beliefs.
