Another Book Review! Why God Won't Go Away, by Alister McGrath

I have to admit that to my recollection I had not heard of the author before I read this book. Apparently, he is quite well known in theological debate circles, having debated the likes of Richard Dawkins.

The book was written quite well, not difficult to read. I find myself wishing for perhaps a little more depth. It does seem at times that "Christianity" is too often equated with "Catholicism" for my liking. However, those things aside, the book was not unenjoyable. I did learn that there is a difference between New Atheism - the tenets of Dawkins, Hitchens, Dennett et al - and your regular, garden-variety atheism, which is useful information. I had considered them as being much of a muchness. It was also enlightening to discover that some New Atheists (probably some of the others as well) are not averse to ascribing to certain eastern philosophies...they are not all as rationalistic and scientific as some might like to seem.

All in all, I thought Mr. McGrath did a fair job of pointing out problems in the ideas of New Atheism, the inconsistencies in thought and practice and the unwillingness to have an open mind that crops up all too frequently in New Atheist circles.

I reviewed this book for the Thomas Nelson Booksneeze blogger review program and received a complimentary copy of the book in return for my honest review. I'm disclosing this in compliance with law.
