Book Review! Thunder Dog, by Michael Hingson with Susy Flory

I know, I know, I need to post more than book reviews! But it's too hot to do anything but read books anyway.

Thunder Dog, by Michael Hingson with Susy Flory is the amazing story of a blind man, Michael, and his guide dog, Roselle, trying to escape one of the twin towers in New York City on 9/11. Interwoven in the tale of their flight to safety are Michael's reminiscences of growing up without sight, the way his family responded to his blindness, his education and relationships with former guide dogs.

This book, well-crafted by Mr. Hingson and Ms. Flory, was an inspiration to me. I have always had respect and awe for the work done by service animals and this was only heightened by my reading of Thunder Dog. Society owes a debt of gratitude to the people who raise these dogs from puppyhood and then to those who train them to be eyes, ears and limbs for those who need them.

I loved reading about the relationships Mr. Hingson has had with his various dogs and I am stunned by the steady devotion shown by Roselle during the fall of the towers and in the aftermath. The book made me think about and appreciate more the devotion of my own little dog, a drop-off who showed up at my house nearly two years ago. Although he doesn't have service dog training, it is the great hearts of animals such as him and Roselle that add so much to the lives of the people they love.

The book is a great read!

I reviewed this book for the booksneeze.com blogger review program and received a free copy of the book in return for my honest review. I'm disclosing this in compliance with the law.

You can find out more about the book here where there is even a link to a full screen flip book to look at.
